Biodiversity Barometer

UEBT not only provides the tools for sourcing with respect, we also raise awareness about challenges and opportunities in ethical sourcing and share trends in this space. Our flagship research is the Biodiversity Barometer. This special consumers-focused report has shown that biodiversity awareness is the new normal: consumers have a clear understanding of what biodiversity is and they want companies to respect it.

UEBT’s Biodiversity Barometer 2024

Since 2009, 15 years of UEBT’s quantitative research have highlighted the amazing growth of biodiversity awareness, with more companies and brands taking a stand in favour of sourcing with respect for people and biodiversity. In 2024 the organization worked with Toluna-Harris Interactive on a worldwide survey that takes a deep dive into consumers' biodiversity aspirations and expectations.

Over 86,000 people spanning 16 countries have been surveyed since 2009, and their responses have provided valuable insights to companies and governments working on biodiversity. In recent years, consumers have become more demanding, asking for more information on natural ingredients and looking deeper for regenerative and fair sourcing practices.

For several years at UEBT
we have been tracking rising awareness of biodiversity, but today we see something new: awareness has soared, and with this, expectations have hit new heights. However, we also see that the lack of action and transparency from companies must be unlocked. Consumers feel strongly and personally connected to biodiversity, and they wish to see it protected and built back up. They expect companies to take clear steps to do this, but as of now they do not see proof of this
