Policy brief: EU regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR)

The EU regulation 2023/1115 on deforestation-free products (EUDR) prohibits that certain commodities that are associated with the conversion of forests into agricultural land be imported or sold in the EU market, unless it can be proven that they are “deforestation-free”.

EUDR covers commodities, as well as many derived products, used in a range of sectors, including beauty, fragrance and flavour, and food and beverage.

Certain specialty ingredients, such as cocoa butter and coffee skins, will also be covered.

This note aims to provide guidance on the scope and implications of EUDR, with a focus on specialty ingredients. It outlines the scope of EUDR, the responsibilities of different companies along the supply chain, and the due diligence process and obligations.
