UEBT helps businesses deliver on their commitments to sourcing with respect for people and biodiversity. Our portfolio of services offers innovative and credible verification and certification solutions that meet business needs, no matter where they are in their sustainability journey.  All UEBT services and programmes are based on the UEBT standard.

For example, UEBT offers cost-effective services related to due diligence. Due diligence consists of several components, including assessing risks in supply chains and identifying specific risks at both the country and at the ingredient level.  UEBT offers tools to support this, including a supplier due diligence platform, and ABS due diligence database, and a responsible sourcing risk database.

Companies may also wish to have independent supply chain assessments for certain strategic botanicals. Field verification focuses on improvements in a supply chain and is led by UEBT experts. Certification is a more formal process where companies can demonstrate their compliance with the UEBT standard.  Companies can obtain certification of one or more specific ingredients in their supply chain.  Certification means a company can use UEBT approved claims including our consumer-facing certification label. Verification allows for text claims off-product.

Companies may also seek to take deeper action on a specific supply chain or ingredient (botanical) through a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). BAPs take many forms and are developed in partnership with local suppliers and organisations. UEBT supports companies on these company actions that contribute to regenerating natural systems.

Backing up your claims

Here is a quick summary of the UEBT services you might seek depending on the claim you intend to make for your product or company:

• Using a certification label - seek UEBT ingredient certification. Becoming a UEBT member is a pre-requisite for this.

  • For herbs and spices, the UEBT/Rainforest Alliance Herbs & Spices program allows for the Rainforest Alliance certification seal on-pack.  

  • If you purchase a UEBT certified ingredient you will need chain of custody approval from UEBT before making claims.

• Making a text claim - seek UEBT ingredient certification or purchase a UEBT certified ingredient and obtain chain of custody approval from UEBT. Text claims are also possible in the UEBT verification programme (not a third-party scheme) for your botanical supply chains. Consumer-facing claims are restricted in verification, but general, sourcing-related and corporate communications are possible.

In addition to verification and certification services, UEBT hosts working groups and technical exchanges on ethical sourcing, raises awareness through our annual conference and flagship research such as our Biodiversity Barometer, and offers customised support and advisory services on a range of issues related to ethical sourcing.
